Accommodation

There are three main areas of Lima in which to stay [as a tourist where the situation for rich tourists is relatively safe, with tourist suitcases, golden rings etc.]:

-- Lima Centro, which boasts hotels in just about every category imaginable

-- Miraflores

-- and Barranco.

Even more than most Peruvian cities, modern hotels in Lima tend to be very exclusive and expensive. There are no campsites [camping], official or otherwise (p.89).

[There are many more hotels and hostels in other Lima districts. Sometimes when they are cheap the standard is very poor, or there is a limit of time. The most important thing for Peruvians in a hotel is TV and not the other guests. For many companies hotels are just an income and standard of living is not important for the hotel. Don't expect you can sleep well when you are in a cheap hotel in Peru. Loud TV until deep in the night is normal because people come from poverty and just had a TV at home nothing more. They don't know about medition or about worth of calm sleep].

[Telephone dialing code for Lima is 01, international 0051-1].

Hotels in Lima Centro [Lima central district]

-- Gran Hotel Bolivar, Jirón de la Unión [Union road] 958, Lima Centro, Lima, T. 619717, Fax 6197170, e-mail reservas@granhotelbolivarperu.com, www.granhotelbolivarperu.com
This old, classic luxurious hotel dominating the northwest corner of the Plaza San Martín has certainly seen better times but is well-located and full of old-fashioned charm. Check out the cocktail lounge (famous for its (p.89)Pisco Sour Cathedral) and restaurant, which often have live piano music most nights between 8-11pm.

-- Hostal de los Artes, [Jirón] Chota [Chota road] 1460, Lima Centro, Lima, T. 4330031, e-mail artes@terra.com.pe
At the southern end of Lima Centro, one block from Plaza Bolognesi, this clean, gay-friendly place is popular with travelers; has a book exchange, English is spoken and there's a nice patio with mosaics. Most rooms have private bath, but there's also a dormitory with a shared bath that costs much less; downstairs rooms are a little gloomy.

-- Hostal Granada, [Jirón] Huancavelica [Huancavelica road] 323, Lima Centro, Lima, T. 4279033

Relatively close to the city centre, by the Plaza Bolognesi, it can be noisy early in the morning, but nevertheless is a comfortable place with a colonial era feel to it; constant hot water, breakfast not included.

A pleasant, safe and gay-friendly place, if a bit shabby. It's conveniently located a few blocks from the Plaza Mayor, offers a choice of private or communal bathrooms (but only one shower for women) and a reliable luggage storage service. There's a TV room and Café Carrara in the entrance area.

-- Hostal Wiracocha, Jirón Junin [Junin road] 284, Lima Centro, Lima, T. 4271178
Run by the same owners since 1975, it's located on the second level, a couple of blocks from the Plaza Mayor. Rooms are fairly spacious and certainly clean; shared or private bathrooms available.

-- Inka Path, Jirón de La Union [Union road] 201, Lima Centro, Lima, T. 4288188, e-mail informes@inlapathhotel.com
Located at the corner with Carabaya, it has newly furbished rooms, all with carpets and very comfortable. Queen-size beds and private bathrooms. Hot water 24hrs a day. Price includes breakfast and Internet.

-- Lima Sheraton Hotel, Paseo de la República [Republic motorway] 170, T. 3155000 or 3155022, Fax 3155024, e-mail reservas@sheraton.com.pe
A standard top-class, modern international hotel - concrete, tall and blandly elegant, though past its heyday.

-- Pensión Rodriguez, Avenida Nicolas de Pierola 730, T. 4236465, Fax 4241606, e-mail jotajot@terra.com.pe.
Excellent value but often crowded, with shared rooms and baths; can be a bit noisy from the road. The hotel will organize airport pick-up if required (p.90).

Hotels in Lima Miraflores, Barranco and other suburbs [Miraflores district, Barranco district a.o.]

Many people opt to stay further out of the city in Miraflores, which is still close to the seafront as well as home to most of Lima's nightlife, culture and commercial activity. However, most hostels here start at around $20 per person and quite a few hotels go above $200. As a trendy ocean-clifftop suburb Barranco is more and more the "it" place for the younger traveler.

Apart from the artist's quarter vibe and the clubs and restaurants, though, the suburb actually has little to offer the visitor in the way of attractions and sights of historical interest. Other suburban options include San Isidro, a mainly residential area, but close to some of the main bus terminals; San Antonio which is within walking distance of Miraflores; and Callao, an oceanside, older part of Lima, but quite distant from most of the city's action and attractions (p.90).
